Rail washers on steam locomotives?

The Southern did experiment with rail washers on diesels in the 1960's in Alabama.  They tried them on Iron City between Anniston and Heflin and also on Tuscaloosa Hill on the AGS.  Both hills were the ruling grades on their respective sud-divisions.
