Routing for private car owners special approved
Published: November 30, 2011

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Norfolk Southern has approved a special “rare mileage” movement for the 2012 Convention of the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners. The group’s 35th annual convention will be held at Chattanooga on Sept. 27-29, 2012, at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, the former Southern Railway Terminal Station opened in 1909.

A special train, operated by Amtrak in conjunction with NS, will run from Washington, D.C., to Chattanooga. It will cover a substantial amount of mileage off the Amtrak national system, on tracks where there is no scheduled passenger service.

On Sept. 24-26, 2012, the special train will operate over the former Southern Railway from Washington to Spencer N.C., then to Asheville N.C., Knoxville Tenn., and Chattanooga.

The train will return to Washington on Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2012, operating from Chattanooga to Knoxville and Bristol, Tenn., where it will switch to former Norfolk & Western trackage to Roanoke, Va. After overnighting in Roanoke, the train will use NS’s ex-N&W Hagerstown line to Front Royal, Va., then onto the former Southern Railway into Washington.
