Jeff,
Thanks for reminding us just how observant and eloquent David P. was. Writing like his and of Lynn Westcott just doesn't seem to exist any longer in the mags. I didn't agree with all of DPM opinions but he certainly knew how to put it all together in words. He definitely "saw" things and didn't just look at trains.

Gentleman,
It is an Apples to Oranges comparison as has already been stated.
I will leave you with some quotes from David P. (who wants a cab ride?) Morgan, November 1954 Trains magazine
"Though a Y6 will turn up 50 miles per hour, her true talent is tonnage at a more modest gait- say, between 20 and 33, where she will churn up 4800 drawbar horsepower mile after mile."
"A glance at the lithe, high carriage of the class A 2-6-6-4 is enough to convince one that compounding would never work here. This is horsepower, the very exemplification of what that term has come to mean for US railroading..."
"The J - class 4-8-4 of Norfolk & Western is weighty evidence, though, that it is indeed possible to slip a party dress over boiler and rods and emerge without serious compromise of mechanical integrity. Her bullet - nosed jacketing flows back to the cab with religious regard for the contour of the boiler; atop is a sky-line casing of Espee origin. The whole effect, in jet black relieved by a broad band of Tuscan red at running board level, is one that has weathered the years as well as the ageless GG1 electric."
