The extra dome covers an unusual injector which N&W installed on the M1's and a few 2-8-0's. It is sometimes referred to as "the poor man's feedwater heater," as the idea was to more or less spray the feedwater  in the top of the boiler rather than simply inject the cold water directly into the boiler water. I don't have any information as to whether it helped or not. Significantly, N&W was an early user of REAL feedwater heaters.

Curious if anyone knows the purpose of the 'extra' dome that is located
between the sand dome and the bell on these two locos? Probably 4-8-0s.
