Stephen,

The only additional thing I know about the bankruptcy of the Rorer Iron Mine, is that two bids were made to purchase the property and all its assets. A man named William Welch made an offer of $25,000 but before the court confirmed the sale/purchase they heard of another bid coming so they held off closing the deal. The second offer came from C. M. Clarke, acting as the E. W. Clarke & Company of Philadelphia, for $35,000. As you know, that is the same financial company that had connections with the SVRR, the N&W, etc. Welch made his offer in late 1887. The property was finally sold in February of 1888. Clarke & Co. was acting for the Virginia Mineral Trust Company. By the end of that year the mine was shipping ore to the Pulaski furnace.

Rorer's personal life was on a rollercoaster. In late 1886, his eldest daughter, who had married Capt. James B. Gregory of Gregory Brothers: Book Sellers and Stationers, died suddenly at the young age of 29 years old. In late 1887 another daughter, Eulalia, married L. L. Powell, of Portsmouth. All through 1886 and 1888 Rorer was involved a series of law suits. And of course, there is the bankruptcy itself.
