The 60th Anniversary of the end of N&W steam is a week away.

Steam operations concluded in Williamson WV at the end of a work week on a
warm Friday night (May 6) into early Saturday AM (May 7) when S1a 291
(former 215) completed her shift and the fire was dropped. 2190 had finished
her last assignment earlier in the day on Friday. The afternoon edition of
the May 6th 'Williamson Daily News' reported that it had been 77 degrees at
10am that morning, and the forecast was for "Scattered showers and thunder
storms tonight and mostly cloudy and rather windy and warm. Low around 60."
Steam ended on a warm spring night with maybe a little rain.

Monday came and the Pigeon Creek Shifter departed west behind diesels, and
there was no longer the sharp exhaust of an 0-8-0 drilling coal loads in
front of the passenger station.

A notable anniversary. John Garner
