I am sure Jimmy Lisle is correct in his memory of the Link cigar story.

These accounts of O. Winston Link and cigar smoke remind me of a
personal encounter involving both entities.  Back in my pipe and cigar
smoking days (never cigarettes), I took a steam locomotive excursion
train out of Roanoke on the N&W's Hagerstown line, and the consist
included an open-door (with safety gates across the lower halves of the
doorways) baggage car.  I had a lit cigar in this largely open-air car
as I made my way to join two others at one of the open doors.  The other
two at that doorway were Charley Woodson, N&W Manager Purchasing, who
was a friend of Link, and Link himself.  In spite of the air and steam
locomotive smoke swirling around the open doorway where the three of us
stood as the train rushed along, Link detected my cigar smoke and told
me in no uncertain terms where to go and to take my cigar with me.  He
was a very forthright man.  I complied.
