The Southern diesels began to power the run-through trains as of January 1, 1958, as steam was ended on the Bristol Line from Bristol to Roanoke. The Southern trains ran Bristol-Roanoke-Lynchburg. The Southern power continued to be used on passenger trains, for the most part, right to the end of service, on May 1, 1971.
