All, Dan asked this question over on the Steam Era Freight Car list as well, where he received a thoughtful response from David Thompson. I thought it was worth reflecting here, for those that whose interest was piqued by Dans question (and don’t have the Dow book).

N&W received 4,000 class HM cars in 1910-11, and 8,000 class HP in 1911-15. Two cars were lost early, but the combined 11,998 were about half of N&W's hopper fleet up to 1922.
The 3,945 surviving HM cars were rebuilt to HPa (2,000 cars) and HPb (1,934 cars) in 1924-6. The other 11 were presumably lost to accidents or dismantled.
The 7,855 surviving HP cars were rebuilt to HPc (5,450 cars) and HPd (1,500) in 1927-32. Two HP were left unrebuilt, and the other 903 were dismantled.
This resulted in 10,884 rebuilt cars, about a third of N&W's hopper fleet of just under 30,000 cars in the mid-1930s.

Dear List,
During the HP hopper rebuilding program of 1923-32, how many HP cars were rebuilt into each of the HPa, HPb, HPc, and HPd subclasses? Were there any cars that persisted as unrebuilt HP cars? I am trying to understand the relative prevalence of each of these subclasses in the immediate pre-Depression (1929) era. Thanks for any help on this matter.
