Looking to Replace My J Class Engine

My guess would be economy. I read somewhere that the N&W used the rounded tender edges in spite of the added cost. I'm glad they did as they were so distinctive.
The L&N used them on their M-1 2-8-4's and Virginian had some. I don't remember any others.
