Tender inspection hatches

To add to what Jim said......With the big tenders for engine classes such as A, J and Y, the hatch also gives access to a strainer that is in place in the bottom of the water leg. One on each side.  The purpose of them is to try and catch any trash, rust flakes, etc. before it gets into the tank hoses, injectors, water pump and eventually the boiler.  The strainer sits over a valve (one on each side) that can be shut off by someone up on the tender deck. Another use for the hatches is to hang a fan over it to move air through the tender when the new guy is down in the tank cleaning it out! Will Sadler Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

        The plates were in this location for inspection of the water "legs", which would otherwise be difficult to reach from inside the rest of the cistern. In many of the tenders, this was a retrofit, indicating that experience with inspection inspired this innovation.                 Steam tenders had a large (?) round inspection plate in the lower forward lt & rt corners. Was there a reason for this being in that location? Was there a shutoff valve or something in that area that needed periodic maintenance? Strainer/filter?
