Ampersand (&) on N&W box cars?

Ken,

I had heard the same story about R. H. Smith and the ampersand.  I don't
recall who told me about this. Perhaps someone with N&W noticed the other
roads with "and" spelled it out, i. e., Baltimore and Ohio.  Like you said,
who knows?
