Ampersand (&) on N&W box cars?

 The point being that the ampersand is an abbreviation. Thus, "N&W" is okay, but spelling out Norfolk and Western means "and" should be spelled out, not abbreviated.

I had heard the same story about R. H. Smith and the ampersand.  I don't recall who told me about this. Perhaps someone with N&W noticed the other roads with "and" spelled it out, i. e., Baltimore and Ohio.  Like you said, who knows?

The change from the ampersand kind of fits with the story I was told almost 50 years back, that someone had told R.H. Smith that using the ampersand in the road name was incorrect and he had it changed.
