N&W station green model paint

Dutch Thompson states: "There was a very good Arrow article in Nov/Dec 1998 about the passenger station paint schemes used on the N&W. It included the following paint suggestions to use when modeling stations with white bodies and green trim and roofs."

Wally added: "What is the time frame these N&W Depots were painted in green and white?"

Jim Nichols stated: "... I considered Floquil dark green to be closest to the prototype color."

As information, many N&W "first class" depots were constructed with slate roofs.  Therefore, the roofs for early models before roofing was replaced with tin-plated steel is slate gray.

This leads to the question: when did N&W have a program to replace the slate roofs?  When this occurred, some received asbestos shingles while others had standing-seam metal roofs.  Although the metal roof at Boyce is believed to have been replaced during the post World War II period when passenger traffic temporarily rebounded and was painted green, a non-prototype white color was selected for two reasons.  First, the end ventilation dormers were removed at the north and south ends to reduce the re-roofing expense, so air flow through the attic was reduced.  Summer attic temperatures exceeding 120 degrees were common.  Second, white reflects more of the radiant heat from the Sun, extending roof life.

There were no prototype paint guides available to me in 2003 which specified the green hue, so Boyce depot's green is Rustoleum "Hunter Green." That paint chip can be obtained at Home Depot which sells Rustoleum oil-based paint.

A similar question arises about the removal of first-class station platform canopies. I suspect that there was a program to remove all of them when those roofs began to leak, passenger service declined, and they posed a clearance problem for high-cube boxcars. Perhaps that was the mid-1950s but firm information is welcomed such as dated photographs with or without the canopies in front of a depot.

Best wishes for July 4th,
