That goes in both directions really. There's also the problems of "official
corporate cannon" vs. what actually happened. Such as the case of the Super
Mario Bros. currently claimed release date in the U.S. Or for instance in
regards to Space Invaders, where industry insider Kevin Williams says it
was known within Taito the idea came from their earlier EM game Space
Monsters and the characteristic sprites were supposed to have been used as
test patterns in their pre-Space Invaders video arcade games.
(Interestingly, the Space Monsters connection was up on Taito's Japanese
website up until shortly after Kevin wrote the article for me at CG.com.
That's actually where I got the flyer image from).

There's also Pac-Man, which beyond the official PR, the idea was actually
supposed to have come from a comercial for a Japanese pizza chain which
featured a similar looking character eating up pizzas. NAMCO is supposed to
have bought out the rights to the commercial to bury it.
