Hi all,
I am in a kind of unusual situation this week. I have a show on Saturday which I'm very excited about, but also a couple of friends have CD release parties the same night which, were I an audience member instead of a performer, I would happily ditch my own show for in a New York minute. So, in the interest of fairness, I will list all three shows (one in Providence, one in Cambridge, MA, and one in Cumberland, RI) and you can come to your own conclusions. ;-)
I will list my show first because after all it's my newsletter!
Saturday April 7 - JACOB HALLER SOLO SHOW
----------------
WHEN: 9 pm-1 am
WHERE: AS220, 115 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02907
COVER: $6
A few months ago I was invited to be in a show organized by BebeRequin, and I had such a good time that I decided to put together another show with the exact same lineup. To whit:
- Pete Avitable: Pete is a singer/songwriter who writes some smart, witty songs. You can hear one of them here: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAoyajvp480>
- I'll be on second, probably going on around 10 pm give or take. Some of the other musicians have volunteered to sit in with me (Matt has offered to play accordion and Mark has offered to play slide guitar), so I'm trying to put together a set list that will take advantage of that opportunity. I'm pretty excited about it!
- Up third is BebeRequin, who are composed of guitarist/accordionist/vocalist Matt Everett and contrabassist/vocalist Rachel Rosenkrantz-Riemer. For this show they'll be joined by violinist Kate Conroy. An early recording is online at <http://vimeo.com/22375520>.
- Fourth is Laila Aukee (of the popular local band the Sugar Honey Iced Tea) who will sing and play ukulele. Here's a recording: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8IOqtNWPqo>
- Last but far from least is blues guitarist and singer Mark Milloff, who really blew the lid off the place the last time we had a show. He's got this super energetic Bukka White-inspired guitar style which gets people up and dancing better than a lot of full-scale dance bands.
And that's our show. The other options for the night are:
Saturday April 7 - DANIEL OUELLETTE AND THE SHOBIJIN CD RELEASE PARTY!
----------------
WHEN: 9 pm-1 am
WHERE: The Cantab Lounge, 738 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139
COVER: $8
I always have a hard time describing Daniel's shows to people who haven't experienced them for themselves. I think of them as a kind of a combination of New Wave music and performance art. Maybe sort of in the general area of the B-52s?
Daniel will be playing with an extended band for the night, which really fills out the sound nicely, and will be joined by a few other acts. His CD is called 'The Enchantment'. Here's what it says in the facebook event:
> 9pm Orange Nichole
> 10pm Daniel Ouellette and the Shobijin
> 11pm The Frost Heaves
> 12am The Milling Gowns
> Hosted by the wonderful Mickey Bliss!
>
> We will be joined on stage by
> Elizabeth Lorrey on guitar, Jamie Sylvia on bass, Christian on drums,
> Anne Marie Cleary on vocals... and maybe more!
>
> We worked all last year to get this CD right and we hope you will come join us for the excitement!
> The show is 21+, $8 cover.
SUPERCHIEF TRIO CD RELEASE PARTY!
---------------------------------
WHEN: Saturday April 7, 8-11 pm (doors 7:30 pm)
WHERE: Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad Street, Cumberland, RI 02864
COVER: $10 in advance, $12 at the door - see <http://www.riverfolk.org/tickets.html> for ticket info
Superchief Trio is, at its heart, an excellent New Orleans-style blues band. To the basic trio of Keith Munslow (piano), Pam Murray (trombone), and Jonny Cote (drums), a few years ago they added guitarist Tom Ferraro and bassist Steve Bigelow. It's a bigger sound and they're all top-notch musicians.
They play a lot of funny, danceable music, much of it written by Keith. Pam sings on some songs and has a classic blues vocal style which is really killer.
The facebook event says:
> Join RI's largest trio in celebration of the release of their new album, "Magnetic"! This recording features thirteen original Superchief tunes, like "Evidence", "Waitin' On a Letter", "Are You The Clown?" and many more. Dishing out their signature mix of original swing, boogie boogie and New Orleans flavored blues, the band will be in high gear for this party, and that's a promise. Reservations are recommended .
> Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the theatre at: (401) 725-9272. Admission $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors at 7:30 pm. music starts at 8:00 pm.
>
> We hope to see you there!
> - Keith, Pam, Johnny C, Tom & Steve -- Superchief Trio
So those are some options for Saturday night. Choose wisely, and I hope I'll see you all around soon!
Thanks,
Jacob Haller
