Mark, you are exactly right 30% would have given them the power to name 3 or 4 members of the board and along with that comes the power to elect officers. In addition just about all major corporations have interlocking Boards/Officers,

Example: Mr. X is on the board of company A and an officer of company B
Mr. Y is on the board of company B and an officer of company C
Mr. Z is on the board of company C and an officer of company A
and so forth

My guess would be if you reviewed the boards and officers of all the major railroads or companies in general you will find that it's like that "seven degrees of Kevin Bacon" or what ever it is that there is a common thread that links them all together to some degree.

Loads of speculation on this topic (pretty much all it
can be I guess) but having worked in corporate
structures 30% is sufficient to influence a company
but not enough to control it.

Any of you rich enough to do this go out and buy 30%
of the stock of any company then come back here and
tell me that you "control" it. ;-)
