The "Huckleberry" is headed for extinction. The present crew of the
Norfolk & Western train, which has made the Christiansburg-Blacksburg
run for many years pose with the engine. From left are B.J. Croy,
fireman; J.E. Kesling, Radford, brakeman; W.E. Riffey, Pulaski,
brakeman; E.D. King, Radford, conductor, and R.B. Orender, Roanoke,
engineer.

The "Huckleberry" will be replaced by a diesel sometime in June. The
train got its name from an old-timers' story that passengers had
plenty of time to pick huckleberries along the track and still catch
up with the train. With the exception of King who will retire, the
present crew of the "Huckleberry" will man the diesel.
