ENGINEERS DELIGHTED WITH PICNIC TRIP
------
Return From Spartanburg, S. C., Singing Praises of Hospitality of C. C. & O. Brethren

The members of N. H. Smith division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, of this city, who were tendered an excursion by division No. 781, returned to Bluefield last night, after one of the most enjoyable outings, they all declare, that they ever attended. The party left Bluefield on Thursday morning and went to St. Paul where they took the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio for Johnson City, Tenn. They left Johnson City on Friday morning at 6 o'clock on a special train and reached Spartanburg, S. C., at 1:15 p. m. Dinner and refreshments were served on the train by division No. 781, the members of which exerted themselves to show the visitors a good time. At Spartanburg the party was taken over the city in automobiles and left on the return for the homeward journey. At Altapass supper had been prepared and the whole party, numbering 164, were entertained at the Altapass Inn.
The scenery along the road is described as the most magnificent, and in one place, down the Blue Ridge, where there is a drop of 945 feet there are nineteen tunnels in fifteen miles, and all along the way the most interesting glimpses of mountain, valley and river made the journey one never to be forgotten. The party was joined at supper at Altapass by Superintendent L. H. Phettyplace, Trainmaster L. L.McIntyre and Master Mechanic H. F.Staley, of the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio, all well known former Bluefielders.
The returning excursionists were so busy expressing their appreciation of the excellent entertainment they received and the efforts of the members of division 781 and the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio people to make them happy, that the conclusion is reached that in spite of all of the pleasant sights and scenes the feature of the occasion was the royal entertainment.
[The next two paragraph listed the people in the Bluefield party and is omitted here.]

[This, and previous articles, indicate that the CC&O was originally staffed with numerous former N&W railroaders.]
