I was told years ago that the #1776 broke down during the 1978 BRAC strike and that it was repainted black in the Fall of that year. Anyone know if that's true?

The locomotive was originally numbered 1776.  N&W's 115 SD-45's were numbered 1700 through 1814.  I happened to be in Roanoke taking pictures at Shaffer's Crossing just prior to the locomotive being painted.  The unit was there still in blue with yellow, lettering as delivered from EMD, being steam cleaned as a first step in prepping it for painting.  I took a number of slides of the unit. (blue peeling paint and wet)  I feel sure the unit was painted in Roanoke. I'll pull the slides out tonight and see what was the date.  I was pleased to get shots of it still painted in blue.  I also have shots of it after it was repainted in NW black following the Bi-Centennial (I'd be sure this was done when it went to the shop a periodic major overhaul.

As a side story:  I have a set of N&W official 1776 painting blueprints (including a full size print of the circle of stars on the sides of the high-nose, short hood) that I received from N&W for painting a pair of Lionel O-Gauge GP-9's NW Black. I was never told who the GP-9's were painted for but they came from Roanoke by way of the locomotive Mechanical Dept management in Brewster, OH for me to paint. (This was when I was living in NE Ohio in the 1970's and went to Brewster almost weekly.) There was a whole stack of NW Black, painting blueprints for various locomotive models in addition to the set for 1776.

I'll look at the slides I took to provide an approximate date for when it was painted bi-centennial 1776. I should have its retirement date at home.  What are you asking relative to the official owner of the unit?  It was an N&W owned locomotive.  Were you interested in knowing if a Bank and Trust Company was the official owner and it leased leased to N&W?

Subject: NW 1776 questions:

I'm createing a page highlighting a photo of N&W 1776 at the VMT.
http://www.genebowker.com/fading-glory in my Railroads 101 series.

I want to improve the information on the page, so I have a few questions:

1) Was the SD45 renumbered to 1776?
2) When was the unit repainted? Was this done in Roanoke?
3) When was the unit officially retired?
4) Who is the official owner of the unit?

Thanks in advance as always for the help!
