Gordon,

There was a constant "battle" about WHO caused an automobile to be damaged during shipping when it happened . . . . how it was chocked, was the car humped or switched at high speeds, poor tracks, etc.  We had a cut of empty bi-levels that were switched on the fly that broke through the stop at the end of the tracks and went into plant's exterior plumbing and transformers.

Auto company randomly recorded g-force data ID'ed specific sections of track "out west" that exceeded design levels.

I was told stories of railroad mechanical office engineers riding in freight cars with sensors and ink-pen strip recorders early on to turn on the recorders when cargos started "buzz" and move around near specific mile posts.  This lead to changing spring rates on the trucks and pooling the cars for specific cargos.
