Jim:
Although the line to Gilbert is
TC territory, there's one end of the
siding at Pkin that the train taking
siding got a "TS" indication --meaning
a crew member had to hand throw the
turnout to enter the siding. With new
signals in place, maybe this has been
eliminated.

Correct, the track in the center of the
east and westbound main tracks was to
set off east loads coming off the branch
and for westbounds to set off empties.

As to the length of the west leg of the
wye -- this was the only route to Gilbert
until about 1985. Only then was an
eastward connection from the Gilbert Branch
to the main line added. Never saw justify-
cation for this addition, but tonnage wise,
the Gilbert Branch had advantages. Ex. an
SD-60 Gilbert to Staggerweed Tunnel is rated
at 5,000 tons, but an SD-60 Elmore to Clarks
Gap is rated at 2,000 tons. There was some
thought that eastbound coal would route via
Wharncliffe and Clarks Gap would be aban-
doned, but I don't think it's happened yet.
