     A correction to the previous post please -- the Class J 4-8-4 would
clear the thru truss span over the Dan River in either direction.  It
was the Class A that had to be hauled backwards dead-in-tow to
North Winston for a steam special.  Northbound, the overhang of
the boiler wasn't a problem. The Dan River bridge sits in an "S"
curve with the thru truss spans angled accordingly. 

The problem with the Js on the Eisenhower Special came at
North Winston.   There's no turntable or wye for turning locomotives,
but power made a 180 on a loop track with a very tight radius. Each
J had to be hauled pulled through the loop by a yard engine and
the rail had to be greased to avoid derailing.    Harry Bundy
