When split between NS (58%) and CSX (42%), Conrail became a jointly owned subsidiary of the two parent companies. Conrail property was split between the two companies by creating two new LLCs, Pennsylvania Lines (PRR reporting mark) for NS and New York Central Lines (NYC reporting mark) for CSXT. Also as a result of the merger, NS also obtained rights to the CR reporting mark thereby negating the need to apply new reporting marks to the Conrail rolling stock it acquired. NS did, however, apply the PRR reporting mark to Conrail locomotives that it acquired. CSX applied NYC reporting marks to the Conrail rolling stock that it acquired as a result of the merger.

In order to avoid duplicate reporting markings with the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reporting system, it was agreed that CSX would add PRR to the unique number of the equipment they acquired. NS would not add anything to the equipment they acquired in the division of Conrail equipment they received in the purchase.

They use to go further and have metal plates attached to the locomotives and other equipment which identified the entity, normally a bank, that had financed the purchase.
