Could this have been an experiment to address the adhesion problem of the front engine after the booster valves were installed and before the front frames were leaded?

Here is a side shot of 2194 that clearly shows the relative size difference
between the front and rear sand domes on the 2194.

I was aware of sandbox variations on the six Y5?s modified for yard hump
service.  These Y5?s had larger sandboxes either designed differently or
modified from the standard Y5/Y6 sandboxes.  I was unaware that there were
any other sandboxes designed and used on other Y5 and Y6 classes until this
thread of emails showed up on the mailing list.

I reviewed the list of mechanical drawings in the Archives and sure enough,
there is a drawing E45446 dated 12/3/1952 for a larger front sandbox with
four filler caps for the Y6b.  I will have to research some more for more
details if there is a listing of engines these were applied to.  I was able
to look at the photos the Archives has on line and the only Y6b?s I could
find having the front four filler cap sand boxes were 2192 and 2194.

This is a good find.

I have seen photos or video of two Y6b's with very large forward sand domes,
numbers 2192 and 2194. Does anyone know how many and what numbers of the
Y6b's got these larger domes and if they were built that way or retrofitted?
Thanks, Ed Burnett
