The N&W coal piers at Lamberts Point and the Virginian coal piers at Sewells Point were several miles apart (maybe 3 to 5 miles apart).    Maybe someone else can give a more accurate figure on the spacing.
Gordon:Geographically, the piers were approximately 3 miles apart, but by the railroad connection, theywere more like 15 miles apart.  Remember that before Mr. Fishwick's "permit system",  coal couldbe shipped to Lamberts Point without ever having been sold.  The shippers even got 10 daysbefore demurrage was charged.   About one in very three trains of Tidewater coal went to SewellsPoint and coal was stored there, but eventually transferred to Lamberts Point in  180-car cuts.  From memory,it's about 9 miles from Sewells Point to South Norfolk on the former VGN and there it continued on the N&W.Sorry I didn't bring my timetables to the library.   N&W was barred from operating the transfers during"rush hours".  It was possible to be headed west on Berkley Avenue in an automobile, only  to bestopped by the approaching coal transfer. After the train cleared, drive another 8 or 10 blocks andget stopped by the same train. Norfolk Terminal had the capacity to hold 24,000 cars in storage.  Harry Bundy
