Hi Vic,

I have a few of the MTH Class A engines as well and they do not have the sheathed smokebox. It should not be painted grey if it had the sheathed smokebox.

Most of the Class A engines as far as I can tell did not have the sheathed smoke boxes.

I’ve seen the photos of the 1213, 1214 and 1218 with the sheathed smokebox.

I saw a video with the 1217 in it that has the sheathed smokebox. It was taken during the 1957 Railroad Convention.

> Thank you for the photos! It looks like most of the ?A? photos I have include the jacketing. The ?coffin? feedwater heater on the other locomotive is what I was thinking of, although I had forgotten the purpose.

My layout is not really large enough to justify two in the lead and one as a pusher with only about 30 hoppers between them, but they can sure fill the room with lots of smoke and make for interesting conversations with visitors!
