Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delayed reply. My email has been down.
I am currently still in Japan and my "A"'s are in Woodstock, IL, so I will have to re-check them when I return at the end of the month.

Subject: Class A sheathed smokebox.

Hi Vic,

I have a few of the MTH Class A engines as well and they do not have the sheathed smokebox. It should not be painted grey if it had the sheathed smokebox.

Most of the Class A engines as far as I can tell did not have the sheathed smoke boxes.

I’ve seen the photos of the 1213, 1214 and 1218 with the sheathed smokebox.

I saw a video with the 1217 in it that has the sheathed smokebox. It was taken during the 1957 Railroad Convention.

My layout is not really large enough to justify two in the lead and one as a pusher with only about 30 hoppers between them, but they can sure fill the room with lots of smoke and make for interesting conversations with visitors!
