NKP 765 never ran a J class whistle on the Pokey In fact they use my N&W hooter from a Y class .

The steam pressure makes a difference in the sound of the same or identical whistle. NKP 765 on the last Pokey used a J whistle and there was a noticeable sound change. Same using air pressure vs steam. I was told the heat from the steam and cooler air temp had some effect and the air pressure drops while steam remains the same. IDK for sure as that's what I was told years ago.

Hi,
I asked a few mechanical engineers and they loved the question. They would only agree it's going to sound different.

The steam pressure makes the whistle effectively longer/shorter which impacts the frequencies it puts out. You can read the list of things in that link above.
I guess the best idea is to listen to an A/Y and an M. It's different.
Yes there is a short/long bell hooter. It must have been real disappointing to hear the 1200 when it had the short bell on it. They eventually put the long bell on all the freight locomotives.

Does lower boiler pressure equal a lower pitched whistle?
The S1/S1a had a boiler pressure of 220 psi. The M (200psi) seemingly sounds different than an A or Y (both 300psi).
For that matter, does the A/Y have a longer single note whistle than the smaller engines like S1 and M? I think there was a long bell and short bell version of the hooter, right?

Switchers didn't blow their whistles very often. No occasion! They did use their bells.

Photos suggest that N&W replaced the C&O whistles. I believe I've seen a few pix of the C&O 0-8-0s in N&W lettering with their original C&O whistles, but can't locate them at the moment..

Would the S1 locos have had a C&O whistle when purchased by N&W?

I went through my analysis of all Link's recordings (published and unpublished) and found no recording that could be identified specifically as an S1/S1a whistle. There were only two remote possibilities (Link Tape E, track 4 and Link Tape AV, track 1) and in both cases there was either a Class A or Y6 nearby. IMO it's fair to say that the 0-8-0's would sound the same as any other N&W freight locomotive. So I agree with John Garner's conclusion.

Ken,
There is audio of S1/S1a's on the Link recordings but no audio of a
whistle that I'm aware of (pls correct me if I'm wrong).
So the question remains. Any known S1/S1a whistle audio?
