Dover Harbor to Roanoke

Good afternoon, all:
Please see the second page of the attached newsletter. The Dover Harbor lay-over in Roanoke may be a nice photo opportunity. It will be interesting to see if the private car seating sells out.
It would be nice if such an excursion could be arranged with a Roanoke head-out, but the logistics for this particular car probably will not work out for a future N&W convention in the Star City. It would required down and back deadheading for someone who wanted to also spend a hotel night in Washington or Alexandria; that deadhead cost will increase the reservation cost.
It would be good publicity for the Archives if people could arrange an optional tour for an hour and see the remarkable N&W and VGN historical resources being preserved.
I know that $419 seems to be expensive, and is. However postage was 6 cents during 1967 and a coach fare round trip between Roanoke and Washington was (I think) about $42. Add a zero to either one and you have the equivalent of 58 years of inflation. Rail travel was never inexpensive; it only seemed to be in our rear-view mirror of recollections
Best wishes as time marches on,
Frank

Dear Frank,
We're excited by the warm Spring weather and the opportunity to go outdoors to railfan! We hope you'll join Chapter members and guests for a chance to share some stories, have a snack and enjoy a great visual program on St. Patrick's Day.
The Old Dominion Chapter's monthly members meeting is Monday, March 17th and longtime Chapter member Charles Curley will entertain us with his program entitled Simply Scenic. Charles is an accomplished photographer who will bring a fascinating visual sample of the many interesting trains he has ridden and seen.
The meeting is tomorrow, Monday, at 7:00pm at the Richmond Railroad Museum in Hull Street Station, 102 Hull Street. We'll have beverages and snacks. Members, guests and visitors are welcome.
The March Highball is also attached below. Editor, Rich Todd, as usual, has packed it full of great articles and photos.
See you Monday!
Dave Coldren
Membership Chair
