The 400,000 gallon water tank at Switchback was part of the N&W's Elkhorn Water District built in 1905 and 1906. In 1910 a 10-inch water line was extended from Switchback to a 400,000 gallon water tank at Powhatan and an 8-inch water line was extended from Powhatan to Vivian.
The switch from the main line to Shamokin was moved a couple of times. All of that info is contained in the Switchback articles published in The Arrow a couple of years ago.

Subject: water tank
Alex, All,
There appears to be a water tank at the top of the switchback just West of the power facility which is West of Maybeury (see photos attached). Was this water for the railroad or for the community? Also, what was the exact location of the turnout for the branching line that lead down into the valley to Shamokin and the other mines. Latitude and Longitude or reference to an existing landmark would be great.
Thanks,
Jim Cochran
