J f Maury, Virginia and Tennessee railroad board
Thought for 1m 7s
Matthew Fontaine Maury (often abbreviated M.F. Maury), a U.S. Navy lieutenant and renowned oceanographer, was elected as a delegate to the July 1849 convention of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad Company, held in Memphis, Tennessee. This convention focused on planning and promoting the railroad's development, including discussions on connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans via rail networks. Other delegates included William C. Riley and John Mason. Maury was a strong advocate for southern railroads, writing articles in publications like the American Railway Journal to promote the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad as a key route for trade and expansion in the antebellum South.
While he supported and publicized the project, there is no direct evidence of him serving on the railroad's board of directors. The Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, chartered in 1849 and completed in 1856, ran 204 miles from Lynchburg, Virginia, to Bristol on the Tennessee border, playing a significant role in regional commerce and later during the Civil War.

Among the delegates (and the complete list of delegates fill eight pages ! ) was one J. F. Maury, representing the Board of Directors of the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad.
I thought perhaps J.F. Maury might be a near relative of Matthew Fontaine Maury (b. Fredericksburg 1806, d. Lexington 1863,) distinguished naval Commander from a prominent Colonial Virginia family, and later diplomat for the Confederate States of America, for whom a river in Virginia is named. But Ancestry.com shows no J.F. Maury in the tree of Matthew Fontaine Maury.
Does anyone know the details of J.F. Maury of the Virginia & Tennessee RR ?
