If anyone is still listening, here is a nice article about the
requirement of a general purpose knowledge representation system:

Personally speaking, I have a renewed interest in the type of analytical
semantics virtually no one ever does - namely metaphysical analytical
semantics - the mapping of words to baseline metaphysical (read:
foundational) concepts - a notion which is a veritable antithema to the
traditional linguistics crowd. And of course anything which is nearly
universally rejected for all the wrong reasons is likely to be a
interesting area to explore, if only because it is terra incognita.
Saussure was wrong. The amazing thing is that anyone ever believed he
was right. Kuhn was wrong too, but that is another story.
