Interesting comments.  It think there's a tendency of many fans to fawn or gush over their favorite stars, including some here on the Slowhand Digest. Others, myself included, believe that they are being objectively critical when EC plays with more or less intensity than they experience elsewhere.

I remember so often, that another guitarist (such as fill in name here _______ ) was seen  to "take EC to new heights." My opinion is that another guitarist (such as fill in name here _______ ) instead usually causes EC to play less and with less intensity.

EC takes HIMSELF to new heights when he's motivated. And often, he's motivated when he's the only guitarist and actually has to do some real work. Frank Zappa once said, "Shutup and play yer guitar." I think it's good advice.

There are exceptions, but in my experience, I find the above to be generally true.
