Update From State Representative Nita Rusich Hutter

The Department of Agriculture and Forestry has issued an Imposition of
Quarantine for St. Bernard and several other Parishes, namely, Jefferson,
Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany,
Tangipahoa and Washington Parishes known to be heavily infested with
Formosan termites.

The quarantine is necessary to prevent the spread of termite infestation
into other areas of the state when millions of tons of wood debris in
addition to the thousands of structurally-unsound buildings and structures
in the named parishes will be turned into wood debris. All movement of any
such wood debris from the affected parishes is prohibited unless treated for
Formosan termites. The sale of any salvageable architectural components
from the named parishes is prohibited until treated for Formosan termites.
Also, all new construction and reconstruction of permanent housing in the
named parishes must be treated for Formosan termites and built with Formosan
termite-resistant building materials.

Two-way traffic will be restored between Slidell and New Orleans by October
31, and all four lanes of the I-10 "twin spans" should be open by
mid-January, according to the Office of the Governor. The state DOTD plans
to build a six-lane, high-rise replacement bridge starting in the Spring of
2006.
