Disaster Relief Update From State Senator Walter Boasso

October 14, 2005

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

* * * In a recent post linking the EPA's search-by-area webpage, an
incorrect link was provided. The corrected information is directly below,
and we apologize for the error. Again, the US Environmental Protection
Agency and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality have made available
the results of sampled & monitored data on floodwater, sediment and air
quality at http://www.epa.gov/enviro/katrina/ and has a search box by area
at http://www.epa.gov/enviro/katrina/emkatrina.html

* * * At the Plaquemines Parish Council meeting earlier today in Belle
Chasse, there was a fairly extensive discussion on the levees and plans for
their proper restoration within Plaquemines Parish, and President Rousselle
stated that the levees were the parish's top priority at this time. Also,
the Plaquemines FEMA Disaster Recovery Center will now be closed on Sundays.
The center is open from 8am - 6pm Monday thru Saturday at the Belle Chasse
Auditorium.

* * * According to a recent news release, the Louisiana Department of
Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) is working with boat owners and their insurance
companies to provide assistance with the documentation required to file
claims for the loss of boats during Hurricane Katrina and/or Hurricane Rita.
If a registered owner were to fax a copy of their driver's license to
225-763-5421, the owner would be able to either request free certified
copies of boat registrations OR cancel registration records. For more
information, please contact Captain Ronald Morris at 225-765-2469 or e-mail
him at rmorris at wlf.louisiana.gov

* * * Earlier today, the LDWF also delayed the 2005-2006 oyster season
opening regarding all public oyster seed grounds located East of the
Mississippi River. According to its news release, the delay will take effect
30 minutes before sunrise on Monday, October 17 and will remain in place
until further notice. The delay was ordered by LDWF Secretary Dwight
Landreneau based on "hurricane-related oyster mortalities that have
significantly reduced available oyster stocks in the area." For more
information, contact Patrick Banks at 225-765-2370 or e-mail him at
pbanks at wlf.louisiana.gov

* * * Finally, for those who are planning to file unemployment insurance or
disaster unemployment assistance (and haven't yet), individuals can call
1-800-430-8076 from 8am - 8pm 7 days a week OR you can visit
http://www.laworks.net

Sincerely,

Senator Walter J. Boasso
