St. Bernard official seek $72 million

Wednesday, 11:45 a.m.

St. Bernard Parish officials asked a legislative committee this morning to
help the parish secure $60 million over the next 12 months to keep parish
government functioning, and another $12 million to keep the Sheriff's Office
aloat.

Before a huge crowd in Chalmette, the parish officials told members of the
Senate and House subcommittee on the reconstruction of St. Bernard and
Plaquemines parishes and the town of Grand Isle that the money might be
needed for a second year, as well, as they attempt to rebuild the devastated
region.

Parish officials are also using the town hall meeting today at the council
chambers on Judge Perez Drive as an opportunity to update residents on the
rebuilding process.
