Update from the St. Bernard Parish School Board Superintendent Doris Voitier

October 21,2005

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

The School Board is moving swiftly to return educational
services to the students who are returning to live in St. Bernard. Portable
classrooms will be set up in the Chalmette High School football field
parking lot within the next few weeks, and the school system hopes to open
temporary classes at that site no later than mid-November.

The school district is also ordering two modular school
buildings, one that will house a Pre-K-8 school and another that will house
grades 9-12. These modular buildings, which are essentially schools, will
offer full facilities, including classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, and a
full-service cafeteria. Those facilities will house students until
permanent buildings can be repaired or rebuilt.

The school district will host a registration for students who
plan on returning to the school district as soon as schools are open.
District administrators will host registration from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.,
Wednesday, November 2nd through Saturday, November 5th at the School Board
administration office, 200 E. St. Bernard Hwy., in Chalmette, the site of
the former Meraux Elementary School.

Parents with questions about their children's educational
services can contact the school system through the Assistant Superintendent,
beverly.lawrason at la.gov, or they can call the State Dept. of Education's
hotline 1-877-453-2721 and ask to be connected to the St. Bernard Parish
Schools.
