Update on Schools, Jobs, and a Walk/Run

Registration is Nov. 1 for school that will start in Chalmette; also
applications being accepted for jobs; and a two-mile Run/Walk will be held
Nov. 6 and the first Sunday of every month.

St. Bernard Parish parents can register children starting Nov. 1 for public
school classes that will begin either Nov. 7 or 14 in a temporary school
being placed in the parking lot of Chalmette High School's football stadium,
officials said Thursday, Oct. 20.

"Our goal is to start classes by Nov. 7,'' said St. Bernard school system
official Ronnie Alonzo. If that date isn't feasible, classes will begin Nov.
14, he said.

Registration beginning Nov.1 will be held at the school system's
administrative building on East St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette, site of
the old Meraux School.

St. Bernard's public school system has been closed because of damage from
Hurricane Katrina.

Opening a school will be instrumental in the re-building of St. Bernard
Parish, Alonzo said. "We have a definite need for a school to educate
children.''

The new school will hold classes for pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade and
have 16-20 classrooms in trailers, with the capability of adding more
classes if necessary.

In January, Alonzo said, the plans are to open two modular school buildings,
one at Chalmette Middle School for pre-K through 8th-grade and the other at
N.P. Trist School for high school, grades 9 through 12.

It's hard to estimate the number of students that will be enrolled for the
temporary school starting in November, Alonzo said.

At first, most will likely be children of St. Bernard Parish sheriff's
deputies, firefighters and other parish employees, plus children of
residents moving back into the parish, he said.

Also, applications are being accepted for several jobs in St. Bernard
Parish.

Job interviews are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at
the URG office trailer at 5002 Paris Road, Chalmette, across from Corrugated
Industries.

Unified Recovery, a contractor of St. Bernard Parish government, has
positions available for diesel mechanics, CDL drivers, equipment operators
and laborers.

Also, framers are being hired by Kevin Wibright Framers, a private company.

Also, on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m., Gibbs Construction will sponsor a
two-mile Run/Walk on Dr. Meraux Boulevard, the street that runs along side
the Council on Aging Building, which is next to the Parish Government
building in Chalmette.

The Run/walk will also be held on the first Sunday of each month in the same
location.
