New School Named St. Bernard Unified

November 8, 2005

A temporary school opening Nov. 14 for returning public school students now
has a name: St. Bernard Unified School.

Superintendent of Schools Doris Voitier said the name was chosen because "We
will have kids from all schools in St. Bernard. We're unifying all
schools.''

More than 700 students, or about 8 percent of St. Bernard's regular
8,800-student public school system, has registered for classes that start
Nov. 14 in trailer classrooms in the parking lot of the Chalmette High
School football stadium.

More than 450 of them indicated they would be there for the opening day and
others said they will attend as FEMA travel trailers are available in St.
Bernard for families to reside in or for the second semester in January,
Voitier said.

The number of students registered was larger than anticipated but Voitier
said the school system will likely be able to open part of the second-floor
of Chalmette High School to use as classrooms.

She has said the entire school may move into the Chalmette High School
building in January for the second school semester.

Voitier also said that if enough students are interested, by the springtime
the Unified School could field teams for baseball, softball or other spring
sports.
