Water now drinkable south of West Judge Perez Drive from Jackson Barracks to
Paris Road; Civic Center opens for distribution of clothing and goods;
donations of medical clinic items sought; council member announces
grandchild.

Water is now considered safe to drink without boiling in areas south of West
Judge Perez Drive from Jackson Barracks to Paris Road, according to Chris
Merkl, head of the water and sewer division of parish government.

Merkl said Friday, Nov. 25, that in the areas of Arabi to Chalmette at Paris
Road, state health officials have lifted an order that had required the
boiling of water before it was drinkable.

The parish is working on getting the same approval for water in other parts
of the parish, Merkl said. "It won't be long for the rest,'' he said.

The Parish Civic Center opened Friday as a place for clothing, cleaning
products and other items to be distributed to St. Bernard residents, who
must show identification to be admitted.

The building will be open at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday,
according to Paris C be Council member Judy Hoffmeister, who is coordinating

the distribution.
Recipients must have identification showing they are St. Bernard Parish
residents, Hoffmeister said.

Items to be distributed include clothing, blankets, toiletries, 5-gallon
buckets containing cleaning supplies and school kits for children, she said.

Donations of numerous types of medical supplies are being sought for a new
medical clinic that is setting up in a triple-wide trailer at the Super
Wal-Mart parking lot on West Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.

The medical clinic is expected to open in the next several weeks.

St. Bernard Parish Coroner Dr. Bryan Bertucci said he is requesting
hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and industry to donate equipment and
supplies for the clinic. To donate, call Bertucci at 450-1059.

Items needed, Bertucci said, include a pulmonary function machine,
microscopes, a centrifuge, cauterizing unit, autoclave for sterilization,
wall-mounted eye and ear scopes, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, weigh-in
scales, tables for dispensers, suture scissors, cloth examining gowns and
alligator-type forceps.

St. Bernard Parish Council member Judy Hofmeister announced Friday she will
be a grandmother for the first time.

She said her daughter-in-law Monique, and son, Jules, are expecting a child
in June.
