It's a little too late for Katrina, but if you start now, you should be well
prepared for the next storm.

The Insurance Information Institute has developed a home inventory program
that are giving away for free.  It allows to create a special entry for each
room in your house, then you can list the items in that room.  For each item
you can specify the cost, date and place of purchase, as well as attach a
digital photo of the item and receipt.

The user interface is a little lacking, but it is better than nothing.  All
information is stored in a single file so that you can email it or burn it
to a CD for easy safe keeping.
