Christmas celebration on Saturday will include tour of decorated trailers
and Santa Claus visit for kids; free flu shots available next to new medical
center; Domino Sugar refinery reopens Dec. 12

When there's precious few homes to decorate for Christmas in St. Bernard
Parish, then it's time for Plan B: a "Christmas Tour of Trailers,'' complete
with prizes for creative, unique, child-life and tacky.

The 6-9 p.m. event on Saturday, Dec. 10, is part of a big celebration that
day that includes a Cajun Christmas Party behind the Parish Government
Building, starting with hay rides at 2 p.m., Santa Claus' arrival at 3 p.m.
with presents for children and a concert from 6-9 p.m. by Rockin' Dopsie Jr.

and the Zydeco Twisters.

In the event of rain, events will be held in the tent behind the government
building.

The tour of decorated trailers is "a stand-in for the annual Christmas Tour
of Homes,'' and an attempt to have some fun by decorating the travel
trailers that parish government employees are living in, said Polly
Boudreaux, clerk of the Paris Council. Boudreaux is an organizer of the
event along with Council member Judy Hoffmeister and parish tourism director
Elizabeth "Gidget'' McDougall.

"Tis the season to be jolly,'' said Boudreaux. "I've seen some decorations
and I think we will have more by end of the weekend.''

The public is invited for the tour, Boudreaux said.

Prizes, sponsored by Chalmette Refinery, will be given in the categories of
creative, unique, child-like and tacky.

Free flu and tetanus shots are now available at a mobile unit next to a new
medical center that opened last week in a triple-wide office trailer in the
southeast corner of the Super Wal-Mart parking lot in Chalmette.

The shots will be given from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The medical clinic, which replaces a medical facility that had been at the
Chalmette High football stadium, is open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Ambulance service is available on-site 24 hours a day. The phone number is
504-208-4024.

Services available at the medical center include fast track/ urgent care, a
pharmacy, immunizations, laceration repair, wound care, respiratory care,
abdominal pain care, treatment of minor eye irritations, minor trauma
treatment, gynecological exams, pediatrics, minor medical complaints and
primary care walk-ins.

The Domino Sugar Refinery in Arabi, one of St. Bernard Parish's top
employers with 330 workers, is reopening Monday, Dec. 12, company officials
said.

The company is celebrating with a 1 p.m. picnic that day for employees,
customers, suppliers, government officials and others.
