I have to agree with Jer for once...I wasn't required to have flood
insurance either, but I CHOSE to get flood insurance...it tightened my
budget and we had to do without some luxuries but we new we lived in a bowl
and therefore the flood insurance would be worth it. In a non flood zone,
flood insurance was only like $200-300...divide that by 12 months and that
is eating out once a month...if that. I know people CHOOSE not to get flood
insurance b/c they weren't "required" but being where we live...that should
have sounded off bells. I do feel sorry for the people that did not have
flood insurance, however...I don't think that the government should pay for
property and back out insurance money...it should be across the board...if
the government wants to reimburse me for all the years I scrounged to pay
for my premiums, well I'll take that...I would be coming out ahead if that
was the case. But to reward those who chose not to buy flood insurance and
penalize those who did...that is just UNFAIR. And I am sure a bunch of
people would agree...to make it fair they should just pay pre Katrina value
for the homes and not back out any insurances since the government did not
pay my insurance.
