Westley,
Please advise everyone in Meraux, Violet and St. Bernard that they need to
immediately fix or erect their mailboxes in order to have their addresses
counted for rural delivery to resume. Some areas have many FEMA trailers on
the street but their mailboxes have been destroyed (or taken down by FEMA
installing the trailers). Postmasters will be going out as early as tomorrow
to start counting the possible deliveries - without a mailbox, you will not
be considered a delivery. If there are not enough mailboxes in certain
areas, delivery may not be extended down those streets. Please have everyone
notify their neighbors about this too. Delivery may not resume until later
in May but the boxes are being counted now.
Also, many people are living in FEMA trailers on their property but their
mail is being forwarded to out of parish addresses. Please come to the post
office trailers in Chalmette to let them know you will be cancelling this
forward as soon as delivery is resumed. Even if you have a mailbox up and a
trailer in your driveway, if your mail is being forwarded, it is assumed you
will not be wanting delivery to your residence. Please let the post office
know otherwise if you want delivery next month. The amount of employees that
will be staying in St. Bernard parish to deliver mail depends on these
counts that are being conducted now.
There are many customers who are staying in trailers on their properties but
have not ever picked up any mail They do not have a forwarding order so
their mail is being temporarily held then returned to sender. Please check
to see if there is mail being held for you at your post office trailer in
the Chalmette Post Office parking lot. Many forwards are expiring because
residents thought they'd be back by now. Please notice if you haven't
received mail lately with a yellow tag on it if you are out of town. It
could well be that you no longer have a forward in effect and your mail is
at the post office trailers.

PLEASE PASS THE WORD - THE MAILBOXES ARE BEING COUNTED NOW. IF YOU WANT MAIL
DELIVERED, YOUR BOX HAS TO BE THERE TO BE COUNTED. NOTIFY THE POST OFFICE IF
YOU WANT YOUR MAIL TO BE DELIVERED INSTEAD OF BEING FORWARDED.

If you can't get to the post office trailers yourself, write a note about
wanting home delivery and let a friend, neighbor, relative bring it when
they go there to pick up mail. Have them ask if you have mail being held
there also!
