[StBernard] Library Grants

Thanks for the info. I'll forward it to Ms. Ethel Llamas--St. Bernard
Parish Library Director. She has been trying to make progress towards
reopening the library, but to no avail. It seems that we don't provide a
vital enough service to warrant much attention. To date, the building has
not been gutted completely. The recreation department employees removed the
books and shelving last fall, but the carpet and sheetrock etc are still in
place.

I contacted the First Lady's organization asking if Public Libraries could
be included, but was told that the grants were strictly for school
libraries. Ms.
Ethel has been in touch with a multitude of folks and organizations who all
want to help, but until we can secure a site, our hands are tied.

I read the St. Bernard News article about Nunez Community College library
reopening. I am very happy for them and understand that all residents can
use their facilities. Borrowing privileges, however, can only be obtained
when one becomes a Friend of the Library and pays a nominal fee. At the St.
Bernard Library no fees were needed to borrow materials.
Patrons in good standing were able to access internet, check out books,
videos, books on tape/CD etc. I hope that our parish officials will work
with Ms. Ethel to get our public library re-opened. We provided services to
readers of all ages--from preschoolers to grandmas and grandpas!

Thanks for thinking about us!

Furloughed St. Bernard Parish Library Employee
