Parish President Rodriguez announces return of Department of Motor Vehicles
to St. Bernard Parish

A mobile unit from the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles will soon
start visiting Chalmette twice a week until a permanent trailer office can
be set up, bringing the services to St. Bernard Parish for the first time
since Hurricane Katrina, Parish President Henry "Junior'' Rodriguez
announced Thursday.

The mobile unit could start coming to the parish in two or three weeks but
an exact location is still to be selected, according to Rodriguez, who said
his office and the parish's legislative delegation has been working on a
deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Port of St. Bernard,
where the DMV office was located before the hurricane. That office was
damaged in the storm.

A date and location for the mobile unit and a permanent location will be
announced soon, Rodriguez said.

He said the return of the DMV office is important to parish residents who
since the storm have had to drive to Jefferson Parish or St. Tammany Parish
and wait in lengthy lines to renew drivers' licenses, register vehicles or
handle other services they could do in St. Bernard prior to Katrina,

Both Rodriguez and state Rep. Nita Hutter of Chalmette, who serves on the
House Transportation Committee, said the Department of Motor Vehicles'
return to St. Bernard is another sign of the parish moving forward in its
recovery
