Kim Fancher, an interior designer from Frisco, Colo., west of Denver, has
friends in the New Orleans area and after visiting for Mardi Gras she was
determined to do something to help people in the Katrina storm-damaged area.

Living in an area where affluent people have second and even third homes for
the ski season and being a member of the board of directors of her town's
Summit County Builders Association, Fancher decided to ask the group to
donate materials left from remodeled homes.

Fancher said many useable materials simply end up in landfills in such
situations.

The builders group jumped at the chance to help, she said, and soon
collected "a lot of new stuff'' and materials from remodeling projects.
"They were enthusiastic about it'' and after receiving publicity about the
collection back home she also had the public donating items.

Collected were doors and windows, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, appliances
and numerous other materials, she said.

Wal-Mart donated two 53-foot semi-trailers and drivers to haul the items to
Louisiana.
Friends helped Fancher get in touch with St. Bernard Parish because it had
been hit so hard in the hurricane. The trucks left Colorado on Thursday,
arrived in Baton Rouge Saturday night and came to Chalmette on Sunday
morning, June 25.

"We want it to go to people who needed it,'' Fancher said.

The items were unloaded by volunteers from the Hill Top group and affiliates
that have been working with St. Bernard Parish government and they are being
stored until it is decided how to work out a program for distributing
materials to the public.
