Rapid census count begins in St. Bernard, Orleans parishes

08/07/2006

Teams conducting a rapid population estimate survey went door-to-door in St.
Bernard Parish last week and will begin knocking on doors Tuesday in Orleans
Parish.
The rapid estimate survey of hurricane-affected parishes is being conducted
by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, the Louisiana Recovery
Authority and the Louisiana Public Health Institute, along with the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The parishes included in the survey are Jefferson, Plaquemines, Calcasieu,
Cameron, Orleans and St. Bernard. Teams have already conducted door-to-door
survey work in Jefferson and Plaquemines. The completion date for this
initial survey is September.

The effort is funded from an $89,000 grant from the Centers for Disease
Control Foundation and $200,000 from the Louisiana Department of Health and
Hospitals-Office of Public Health.

The goal of the project is to provide population data to decision-makers to
use in planning the allocation of public services and disaster recovery
funds, and for the creation of evacuation and preparation guidelines.
