Wes, Craig or anybody?
My family has a perplexing problem dealing with our family home and would
appreciate any help/ideas anyone could give us. My neice owns the house
that our elderly father lived in on W.Beauregard St., i.e.: not in a flood
zone so no flood insurance required, right? My Dad passed away in Sept. of
2004. (Thank Gawd for that because he would have been one who would NOT
have left!) Between Sept.2004 and the "Big K" event, our family maintained
the home and property while deciding our next course of action. We didn't
know if the house was salvagable or if we should have it taken down to
rebuild a new house for my neice to occupy. During that time, our
homeowner's insurance co. found out that the house was vacant and canceled
our homeowner's insurance effective Aug.1, 2005. The neighborhood recv'd 4
1/2 ft. of flood water of which 2 1/2 ft. came into the house. Now the old
home IS unsalvagable and we would like to have it demolished without
destroying the yard with the "scorched earth" technique produced by a
bulldozer. We now have no ins. money and since my neice was not a resident
homeowner, she doesn't qualify for any LRA or other moneies either. Does
she? She was a long time St.Bernard school teacher who was teaching in
Orleans Parish at the time of "K" and has finally been able to return to her
school for an income. Does anyone know of any financial assistance she can
get for demo and rebuild? Plus, does anyone know of demo contractors
available for a decent price? Sorry this email is so long but our situation
has become just another "Katrina Conumdrum" faced by a long time St.Bernard
family. If anyone has any ideas to share, we would be very grateful!

Penny T.
